چکیده

JANUARY 2004 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T he idea that the southern winds might be important to the rate of the deep water formation in the North Atlantic was first put forward by Toggweiler and Samuels (1995). They analyzed the results of a global circulation model (GCM) and showed that the rate of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation increased when the strength of the southern winds was increased. Since a zonal integration of the geostrophic pressure associated with the interior (i.e., the domain below the top Ekman layer and above bottom topography) over the Southern Ocean vanishes, and since there can be no local transformation of Ekman water to deep water, they concluded that the transformation must take place in the North Atlantic via the NADW. In this scenario, the Ekman flux in the Southern Ocean must somehow find its way to the Northern Hemisphere where, through cooling, it sinks to the bottom. We shall show here that, although the mass flux of water crossing the equator is indeed equal to the Ekman flux in the Southern Ocean, the crossing waters do not originate in the southern Ekman layer but rather in the southern Sverdrup interior.

Contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August Rainfall over Uganda and Western Kenya

This study investigates the contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August rainfall over Uganda and western Kenya (KU). The study has utilized the datasets including precipitation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI), ERA-interim reanalysis, and the Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Singu...

Influence of Southern Hemisphere Winds on North Atlantic Deep Water Flow

A series of experiments with a hybrid model (ocean circulation model with simple atmospheric feedback model) and an ocean-only model is used to study the sensitivity of the ocean’s deep overturning circulation to Southern Hemisphere winds. In particular, the ‘‘Drake Passage effect’’ is examined. The results show that two factors weaken the control that the Drake Passage effect exerts over the f...

Freshwater transport estimates and the global overturning circulation: Shallow, deep and throughflow components

Meridional ocean freshwater transports and convergences are calculated from absolute geostrophic velocities and Ekman transports. The freshwater transports are analyzed in terms of mass-balanced contributions from the shallow, ventilated circulation of the subtropical gyres, intermediate and deep water overturns, and Indonesian Throughflow and Bering Strait components. The following are the maj...

The Role of Ekman Ocean Heat Transport in the Northern Hemisphere Response to ENSO

The influence of oceanic Ekman heat transport (Qek) on air–sea variability associated with ENSO teleconnections is examined via a pair of atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) experiments. In the mixed layer model (MLM) experiment, observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) for the years 1950–99 are specified over the tropical Pacific, while a grid of mixed layer models is coupled to the A...

Nutrient streams and their induction into the mixed layer

[1] Nutrients are transferred from the nutricline into the winter mixed layer through a combination of vertical and lateral advection, referred to here as induction, the reverse of the subduction process. This advective supply of nutrients maintains the high productivity at high latitudes over timescales of several years and longer. Climatological diagnostics over the North Atlantic reveal that...
